Why does my 1990 Honda Accord make a grinding sound when i use the brakes?

I'm pretty sure that my brake pads are REALLY worn down but i'm not 100% positive that this is the case.

I slammed on my brakes really hard one night and now every time i use my brakes, it sounds like something is grinding and spinning really loud. The noise is constant and only fades away when i drive faster than 40mph.

Anybody know what the deal is and how much it would cost me to fix it?Why does my 1990 Honda Accord make a grinding sound when i use the brakes?you have used up all of your brake pads and have the backing plates on the rotors... metal to metal. chances are you went from a $200 brake job to a $400 because you will need to buy rotors. I may be wrong if it doesn't happen at all at high speedsWhy does my 1990 Honda Accord make a grinding sound when i use the brakes?Go to a honda service station.
