Can you put front brakes on a bike that only have coaster brakes?

I'm thinking about buying a cheap beach cruiser, but the only thing is the bike only has coaster brakes %26amp; i would need the front brakes for going down hills by where i live. I want to know if it's possible to put front brakes on %26amp; how what will I need %26amp; about how much would it cost? Can you put front brakes on a bike that only have coaster brakes?Your new bike would have to have mounting posts for the front wheel brakes, which I seriously doubt it would. I guess the fork could be drilled and tapped by a competent machinist, but that would be pretty radical and maybe expensive. You might also be able to replace the stock fork with a new one that would take brakes, but then you'd be looking at repainting the fork to match the rest of your bike. All expensive.

Maybe you better just consider a different bike. Besides, if the hills are steep enough to require conventional brakes, wouldn't you need a geared bike anyway? Can you put front brakes on a bike that only have coaster brakes? There are 2 things that might make this difficult. The fork might not have a hole to mount a caliper brake, or posts for v brakes, and many coaster brake bikes have rims that don't work for caliper rim brakes. Before you buy, you should ask in the store if it is possible to mount brakes on the front wheel, and if they have the parts necessary. If they can't answer both questions, don't buy your bike thereCan you put front brakes on a bike that only have coaster brakes?if the reason you want front brakes is for going down hill then you dont need front brakes. when going down hill you use your back brake. if you use your fronts you will go over your handlebars
