How to replace disc brakes on Pontiac G 6?

I have never done before but dealer quoted like 500 dollars for all 4 wheels. So I wont get ripped off.

Can somebody give me a step by step direction?

It has 4 wheel disc brakes which I know is easier than drum brakesHow to replace disc brakes on Pontiac G 6?http://revver.com/video/392436/how-to-re

http://www.ehow.com/how_2116778_replace-How to replace disc brakes on Pontiac G 6?There are few things that are easier to do than disc brakes, and more money-saving. $15-25 for a set of pads, appropriate wrenches, A PAIR OF JACK STANDS, two blocks of 2x4 or bricks or whatever to safely block your rear wheels, and you're ready to go. You should probably have a manual, though. and you will have to be careful to notice and memorize where and how the few parts go. Please follow the safety recommendations in the front chapter of the manual. They're important. and the manual will tell you if you need any unusual tools. I had to remove two rusted screws to get the rotors off, and found that an impact screwdriver ($10--parts store.) and a hammer worked wonders.

At many auto parts stores you can buy a Haynes do-it-yourself manual for your model car, with step-by-step instructions, and basic explanations at the beginning of each chapter. If it is not in stock, you can order it online by searching on %26quot;auto repair manuals%26quot; on Yahoo search. In the front is a section on %26quot;Troubleshooting%26quot; that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car's symptoms. Whether you do the work yourself or not, it helps you make informed decisions and not be taken advantage of, and to not feel so %26quot;in the dark.%26quot;

db667089 says: you can check http://www.alldatadiy.com. For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory manual, downloadable (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

Also, many people recommend autozone.com's free online manuals.

  • My squeaky brakes are driving me mad! How do I fix them?

I drive a 99 Camaro and in dry weather, my brakes squeak like crazy!

It's not that I need new brake pads. The ones that I have are fine. Not thinning or anything.

In wet weather or if I brake hard enough, they're fine.

But it's getting warmer and drier outside and my brakes constantly squeak when I stop or slow down.

My car's supposed to turn heads because it's HOT not because people are hearing a god-awful noise!

It's embarassing! My squeaky brakes are driving me mad! How do I fix them?Pick of a can of brake cleaner from any auto parts store. Whenever you start to hear that noise, take your front wheels off, and spray down the rotor (disc) and caliper. Be sure to turn your rotor so the whole thing can be cleaned. That will clear up the squeaking. My squeaky brakes are driving me mad! How do I fix them?go to a auto parts and buy a brake cleaner that might stop it.My squeaky brakes are driving me mad! How do I fix them?Removing the hubcaps will cool the brakes. That might do it. Also don't ride the brakes. My squeaky brakes are driving me mad! How hard is it to change brakes on a 1998 chevy lumina?

My brakes wore out on my 1998 chevrolet lumina and i will probably need rotors and pads...i would like to know how much im looking at for a shop to do it and if possible could i do it myselfHow hard is it to change brakes on a 1998 chevy lumina?Well its a GM product so it must be bad.... Kidding but it will help to have some of the right tools. If you don't have any of the tools I suggest Autozone and Advanced rent most of this stuff out pretty cheep. Obviously the Caliper needs to be removed from the mounting bracket first and remove the old pads from the retaining clips. You will need a Caliper compressor to push the piston back into the bores for the front disc breaks. Once you have done that you can put brake grease on the back of the pads making sure you get nothing on the friction surface and load them back into the caliper. Clean and grease the guide pins as well so the caliper can move well. Then just bolt it back on and your done with the front.

The Rear is a bit harder. You will need to purchase a break hardware kit with all the springs and a shoe hold down spring tool. The easiest way I have found to remove the springs would be to use a wire coat hanger to just unhook everything. The E Break clip is always a hassle but they sell tools to make it easy but a regular flathead screw driver will work fine to get it off. A pair of pliers to put the knew one on will work fine. Sometimes the hole which the E break rivet goes through needs to be drilled out to fit. Grease the backing plate on the 6 raised bumps where the shoes slide against. Grease and retract the self adjustor and then put everything back the way you found it and your done. It isn't as hard as I probably made it seem but it might be time consuming if its your first time. Make sure before you put the car in gear to pump the breaks about 10 times to be safe otherwise you won't be able to stop. Good luck How hard is it to change brakes on a 1998 chevy lumina? Not hard if you have some basic tools and a little patience. Check out the %26quot;repair guides%26quot; on autozone.com. You will pay a lot more to have a shop do it, probably around $300 with rotors.

My rear brakes stopped working on my bike...how could it have happened...how do i know what it is? what can i do to fix it??What could have caused my rear brakes to fail?If it is a bicycle, there are two types of brakes that are most common, bendix style which is built into the hub on single speed bikes and caliper style that work against the wheel on multi speed bikes.

rust is the most common culpirt on both

either inside the hub assembly or usually in the control cable on the caliper types

    How important are back brakes?

we have a ford econoline van with rear drum brakes that do not pass inspection. from what i was told, its metal grinding on metal back there. we are about to leave on an 8 day trip during which we will be towing a trailer full of musical equipment. the front brakes are new. the van stops fine and i honestly never would have noticed anything was wrong if someone hadnt told me. how important is it that we get these fixed? life-and-death important? please advise. thanks! How important are back brakes?yes it is LIFE-AND-DEATH IMPORTANT, specially towing a trailer with some weight in it.if the rear brakes do not work the front has to do all the work.in a wet road( for example) during panic braking the front tires will lock-up .this will cause vehicle to go into hydroplaning(tires literally floating on water)no effective braking or vehicle control will be achieve, leading to an accident.you did not stated the year of the vehicle,i am assuming it does not have ABS but even if it does the rear brakes need to work for the system to perform properly.get them fix before your trip so you are able to come home safe. How important are back brakes?you need all four to stop right..if you only use ther fron they will get hot and will wear out quickly and car will not stop in as short of distance as you need...also your emergency brake is hooked to the backHow important are back brakes? They balance the braking effort. They will contact everytime you use the brakes and can freeze up against the drum. You will loose control. You will have no braking going backwards. If you are towing a trailer the front brakes may be overloaded. It only costs about $100.00 to get them fixed, why take a chance? How important are back brakes? My Ford van does't have any back brakes and I still drive it, I just don't go on long trips or over mountains :(

oh,and you probably shouldn't be towing trailers although I have, just leave your self lots of room :(How important are back brakes?80% front breaks and 20% rear breaks. How important are back brakes?70% of braking is in the front of the car for forward control. 30% is at the back where it stabilizes the rear and prevents the car from jittering sideways. How important are back brakes?I think that in any type of situation where people are hurt no amount of brakes was enough. Four good working brakes help keep the vehicle under more control if the situation should arise where two werent enough. Now as far as the law is concerned and the insurance companies... have an accident with any kind of faulty brakes and you not them end up paying the bill. How important are back brakes?Back brakes play an important role . when braking for emergency circumstances ....especially if under winter conditions ...especially w/ a trailer ,,,,,injury and damages incurred could be on your head knowing you neglected them ....cheaper to fix them before your trip ,... before possible concequences ....How important are back brakes?Towing? On the highway? Without rear brakes? I hope you have good insurance to pay for the lawsuits and nothing to do for the next 7-10 years when they send you up for involuntary manslaughter. Fix your brakes. $250, drums and everything. Don't be an idiot for $250.How important are back brakes? If they weren't important, they wouldn't be on the van. Why take the chance? How good is your insurance and how much do your parents love you?How important are back brakes?Slam on those brakes and your van will fishtail. Not fun and dangerous. Find you a shade tree mechanic friend. You can get these serviced fairly cheap if someone helps you do it.How important are back brakes? You need to have rear brakes to settle the aft end of your van, especially during hard braking. You don't want your trailer pushing you around, either. You probably just need new shoes.

If you're traveling in an Econoline, take a fire extinguisher, too.How important are back brakes?New drums are only about $50.00 each. Shoes can be found for as little as $15.00 a set. A Haynes manual is only $15.00. A mechanic? That's a little more.

  • How do i adjust the brake pads on a hydraulic disc brakes for my mountain bike?

I have been having problems with the front wheel of my bike in that it doesn't freewheel any more and after checking this weekend i found that i could see and hear right hydraulic brake pad rubbing on the disc.

I have Shimano BR - M486 brakes - i was wondering if how i could adjust this right hand pad by a millimetre or two?

    What is the recommended amount?

    thanks in advance!

KHow do i adjust the brake pads on a hydraulic disc brakes for my mountain bike?you can adjust the right hand side pad by turning the small allen key head that is on the calliper ( the same side as the pad you are wanting to adjust ) this just simply moves the pad in and out depending which way you turn it

This is about the best way i can explain how to sort it outHow do i adjust the brake pads on a hydraulic disc brakes for my mountain bike?Or you can also loosen the allen bolts that hold the calipers, and while it's lose, pump the brakes a few times, and then hold them! tight, and while you old the brake lever down, tighten the allen bolts that hold the caliper, it works pretty good for me. How do I fix my bikes brakes?

My sister gave me a bike that's been sitting around for years. It's in okay shape except that on each side of the bike, each brake has one side that touches the rim. I've been playing around with it but I can't figure out how to adjust them. It's the type of brake system with the center pull thing. How do I fix my bikes brakes? Those brakes are called cantilever brakes.

Unfortunately there are a BUNCH of different designs and every one requires a different method of adjustment, so I suggest you take the bike to a shop. How do I fix my bikes brakes?probably the most common question with bikes sitting around, I'm not a bike expert but I did plenty with bikes when I was little

basically you get some tools in you hand and you play around with screws and nuts until you get the thing fixed look at how the mechanism works and think of what is causing the problem play around a little because you have nothing to lose since the break is not working any way

it'll be a good experience, check the brake before riding on it and make sure nothing is too looseHow do I fix my bikes brakes?you have a v-brake set up its bin a while since iv had them but on the last bike i had with them it wes a 4mm allen key bolt just above the metal stick thats conected to the rubber part of the pad lossen this and pull the pad out a little. failing this the brake lever has a little bolt were the cable enters screw this inHow do I fix my bikes brakes?if the rim is bent do nothing but get a new one

How often is it normal for a car to need to have its brake fluid flushed? If it has to be flushed more often?

does that indicate that there is a problem with the brakes? How often do a car's brakes need to be adjusted? How often is it normal for a car to need to have its brake fluid flushed? If it has to be flushed more often?no just keep adding when needed. when they replace your brakes. they will tell you if it needs to be done. the ones that need adjustments are the rear brakes. it all depents how old your brakes are. or when you take it in you can request adjustments. should not cost much if need adjustment. How often is it normal for a car to need to have its brake fluid flushed? If it has to be flushed more often?I never flush my brake systems. When I replace the pads I figure I get enough fluid out in the bleeding process.

Disk brakes should never need an adjustment.

Drum brakes on modern cars are self adjusting (with in limits), learn how to use this feature on your car.

I know manufacturers have a recommendation on flushing brakes. I tried to find some one to do it once. Even the brake shops were not set up for it. The reasoning is that brake fluid collects moisture and turns corrosive and it will eat up the bores on cylinders. The only cars that I have seen this on had been setting for over 10 years unused. So if you are driving your car on a regular basis, most likely with normal maintenance (brake changes) you will never see it.

Right now in the drive way are two cars that are 19 model years old. Neither has had a brake flush, one did have a caliper replaced. But that was not the lack of a flush that caused the problem.

How to make car brakes stop squeaking?

My friends car is about 12 years old and mechanically the brakes are fine, they stop the car and there is no danger of an accident. the problem is when he steps on brake, they squeak but the car stops. i was wondering if there is a liquid he can put in the car so they wouldnt make the sound, something like a car lubricant? im not knowledgeable about car stuff, but im sure someone who knows about cars would have a good answer and/or ideas, thanks. How to make car brakes stop squeaking?if you put lubricant on your brakes, they wouldn't work.

now usually if brakes squeal its an indicator saying your brakes are wearing down. you see on the brake pads, there is a special friction material, and a metal backing plate. when the friction material starts to wear out, the metal backing plate comes into contact with the metal brake rotor causing the squeaking sound. eventually if you let all the friction material to wear out, and its full metal on metal contact, you'll damage your brake rotors, causing more damage.

just go to the mechanic shop and ask for a brake inspection. if your brakes are fine, ask the mechanic about how to stop your brakes from squeaking. How to make car brakes stop squeaking?thats usually caused because the brake pads are worn down and the brakes are grinding the metal instead of the break pads...bring it to the shop and get em' to check it out for ya. good luck! How to make car brakes stop squeaking?Anti squeal compound can be applied to the back side of the brake pad to stop it from squeaking- as long as the squeak isn't coming from the wear indicator because the brakes have been worn nearly beyond service. I've used anti squeak spray with success too, but care must be exercised to avoid getting it on the disk surface too.

Hmmm; 12 years and the brakes are still OK? They either were changed less than 4 years ago, your friend doesn't drive much, or those are some fantastically high quality brakes.

  • When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?

This is a new development. My cars a 91, so it's pretty old and has problems from time to time. Now when I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot, and sometimes the steering wheel shakes too. I had my front brakes replaced a couple months ago, and the car brakes fine, other than this. Do you know whats wrong? And about how much it might cost to fix it?

Thanks in advance. When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?Did they just put pads in or did they machine the rotors. If they machined the rotors take it back to them and have them redo the machining. The rotor my be under sized and need to be replaced. Undersized rotors will not dissipate heat fast enough and go out of round. If they did not machine the rotors have that done . Have them check the thickness they could be under sizedWhen I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?Your tires need to be balanced. Should cost about $50When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?Warped or cracked brake rotors. When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?Probably either warped rotors (do you %26quot;left foot brake%26quot;?) or brake fluid on the pads, either way you need a brake shop service right away! When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?could bee ball joints or tie rod ends...get to front end shop quick...but drive slow...When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?Since you had the front brakes replaced already (my first guess) I'll make a wild guess that the brake lining has come loose from the backing. In other words, the brake material has fallen off the new brake pad. So you have metal-on-metal when you apply the brakes. That's causing the vibration. A lot of disc pads are 'bonded' (glued) and they do sometimes come off. When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?One thing we do know is that your car is not a Ford! No way it would have lasted this long! When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?you hit the brakes, and a whole lot of shakin goes in?

warped rotors, out of round brake drums, misshapen breake shoes or padsectWhen I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?Your rotors are warped. You may be able to have them %26quot;turned%26quot; (ground down to even them out again). But if they are too warped you need new or you can get used ones for cheaper from a salvage.

The usual cause of this is cheap break pads. They get too hot and actually warp the metal rotor. The rotor is simple a disk the pads press against to stop the car, kinda like the hand breaks on a bike.

If you just had them replaced, take it back to where you had them done and have them fix it. Tell them they are responsible because they used cheap pads...When I hit the brakes they vibrate a lot. Whats wrong with my car?rotor problems.

What do I need to know before I take a Toyota Sienna's grinding brakes in for repair?

When the brakes are applied on a 1999 Toyota Sienna, there is a horrific grinding noise. A pretty loud grinding noise. My strong belief is that the brakes are well past their useful life, and have probably been driven to the point where the repair is going to be expensive.

So, now, before I take it into a shop and %26quot;trust%26quot; someone to diagnose and repair the problem, I am wondering if I can pull the wheels and see how much damage is involved. Is there anyone who can give me a laundry list of items to look at, what okay/not okay looks like, and... maybe even a very rough cost magnitude if it is known?

For what it is worth, I am not a mechanic but I can easily get a jack take a wheel off and look at things. It sure would be nice to know something when I am dealing with an auto repair shop. At the moment, I am a sitting duck for a dishonest garage. What do I need to know before I take a Toyota Sienna's grinding brakes in for repair? The only thing you need to know is your bank balance.

The rotors are shot. You need pads, rotors, probably new calipers, and if the grinding was caused by a faulty master cylinder, you will need one of those too. There is a good chance that contamination got into the brake lines on at least one of the calipers due to the drawback of brake fluid from excessive caliper piston movement, so you may even need a new brake line. That is of course the worst case scenario.

All in all I would roughly guess at a 600 to 800 dollar repair bill, but it may be more. What do I need to know before I take a Toyota Sienna's grinding brakes in for repair?Maybe your break pads need changing and you could go to Autozone or some store and buy those and change the break pads yourself. If that isn't the problem then you'd have to go to a shop and see what is wrong with you breaks. Try the first suggestion b4 you spend a lot of money just in case. What do I need to know before I take a Toyota Sienna's grinding brakes in for repair? The thing that you need to know is that you are costing yourself bucks everytime you use those brakes. YOU ARE TAKING YOUR OWN AND ANYONE ELSE THAT RIDES IN THAT CAR LIVES INTO YOUR HANDS UNTIL YOU GET THOSE BRAKES FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!What do I need to know before I take a Toyota Sienna's grinding brakes in for repair? You need to take it to a Toyota dealer first %26amp; fore most. You most likely will need new pads and if you have driven for too long with them grinding you may need new rotors.

If you go to Midas you will need calipers, pads and rotors. DO NOT go to any aftermarket shop period. They will put very cheap, very hard pads on your vehicle and then you will have squealing and warp the rotors very quickly. Most Toyota Dealers perform brake jobs at a reasonable cost (we charge $179.95 for a brake job with new factory pads and resurfacing the rotors)

    Good Luck

See Wizard8100 works for Midas... all that he said is complete B.S.

How can i make the brakes on my car stop squeaking?

i had my brakes changed a few months ago but they are still squeaking. Is there any way to make it stop? How can i make the brakes on my car stop squeaking?HI

the other replies did not read you whole question...

HE REPLACE THE BRAKES A FEW MONTHS AGO..

It sounds to me like the folks that did your brakes did not use the goop or the insulator a thin peace of paper like material that is supposed to stop the squeaking... it goes on the back of the pads to stop this as disc brakes are notorious for that.. and the goop stops the noise from the vibration of the disc pads. I'd maybe go back to the people that did the brakes and ask them if they used the goop or the insulator. Most likely there going to tell ya yes but by the noise I'd say they did not.

Next time, make sure you don't buy the cheapest one on the market, as the cheap pads may be the culprit.

Take it back to where you had them installed, and ask them to put on some lube that came with the pads. It's not lubricant, but some kind of lotion/grease that minimizes noise on new pads.

My moms ford explorer has had the brakes redone about 5 times, and nothing has gotten rid of the squeak...How can i make the brakes on my car stop squeaking?It can be several reasons;

one it may be that your vehicle requires metallic break pads or semi-metallic which will cause some squeaking initially.

Second it could be that the rotors need to be turned.

But you could also request when a break job is done to have them use this orange goop which helps prevent squeaking by sealing the break pad and buffering between the rotors.

Also a friend of mine that was a mechanic told me if they don't bleed the breaks enough or properly they will squeal too as well as not function properly. How can i make the brakes on my car stop squeaking?sometimes filing the edges on the pads down a little with a file works. How can i make the brakes on my car stop squeaking?slowly drip or spraw WD-40 in on the pads

How to fix my disc brakes on my bicyle ?

I have a Kona blast and the front and back disc brakes work but very poorly. I tried to tighten the wire but it did nothing. How can I fix them ?How to fix my disc brakes on my bicyle ?Make sure both rotors and brake pads are clean. They may be contaminated, which can cause poor braking power. Use rubbing alcohol to clean the rotors, and use fine grit sanding paper to clean the pads.

  • Could i convert the brakes on my trek 820 to disc?

I am having to replace my rear wheel anyways so I was wondering how much more it would actually take to convert the brakes over to discs. what all would be involved and about how much would it cost me compared to just replacing the rim? Thanks!Could i convert the brakes on my trek 820 to disc?I assume that the frame has the appropriate disc mounts... if it doesn't you can't readily swap to discs.

Anyway, since you have to replace the rear wheel you could purchase one with a disc hub then buy a mechanical disc brake setup... maybe something from Avid. Figure $70 for the caliper and disc plus the cost of the wheel and the swap.

If you were in my shop I would advise against having a disc on the rear only. If you wanted only one disc it should be on the front. Why? The front wheel should take care of 70% of your braking needs while the rear brake is for control. If this doesn't quite sound like how you use brakes then perhaps it is a better idea to save the money and practice using the front brake as it was meant to be... forget the horror stories of flipping over the handlebars... they are true only if you aren't riding to the bikes fullest potential.Could i convert the brakes on my trek 820 to disc?you cant. Treks tend to break in half when they get disc brakes.

How much will new brakes cost for my car?

i drive a 2001 Ford Explorer and it really needs some new brakes. money is tight we all mostly know, and im just curious to know how much it will cost me.How much will new brakes cost for my car?Funny you should ask. I also drive a 2001 Explorer and need new front brakes. I live in Arkansas and called for prices yesterday. For me, it will run about $130-$140 plus tax. I know I can do it myself cheaper, but don't have the time. The break pads are about $20 and to turn the rotors here costs about $10 so, for about $30 and a few hours of my time, I could do it myself. How much will new brakes cost for my car?It depends on how many you are changing. If you go to a dealer, they will charge you between $400-500 for the front, $300-$400 for the rears.

If you go to an independent brake shop, you might pay about 60-75% of the dealer charges.

If you buy the brake pads yourself ($75-$150 each), you might be able to pay a local mechanic for his/her time, probably around $30-40 per hour, for the job.How much will new brakes cost for my car?disc brakes:http://www.car-stuff.com/mmparts/ford-ex

Okay so here is a little story about today. I was driving from my house to subway (Like you care) but i was slowing down to get ready to turn and my mom was telling me i was riding the brakes. I dont think i was. But does anyone no how to avoid this? How to be a good driver and not ride the brakes?Well from reading what you said, you did not ride the brakes.........How to be a good driver and not ride the brakes?Your right foot ALWAYS controls the accelerator AND the brakes regardless of the type of transmission in the car. Anticipate your turn loooooong before you arrive at the turning point.

If you have a manual transmission, the left foot ALWAYS operates the clutch. How to be a good driver and not ride the brakes?Keep your foot off the brake pedal unless you want to apply the brakes. How to be a good driver and not ride the brakes?Hit your brakes gently on the straight road, way before going into the turn. Doesn't sound as though you were riding your brakes while turning.

I've seen people slow down to, i.e. 25 mph before/on a turn, and still hit their brakes throughout the turn(!) Then there are those who do 45-50 before/on turns, no brakes. That's on a flat road.

I'm in a hilly area, with, depending on which direction you're going, steep downhill turns, in succession. Too many have ended up being airlifted or scraped from against rocks, poles, guardrails or trees. Accidents always happened after a steep turn. Why? Speeding. 'Nuf said.

How long are the stock brakes supposed to last on a 1995 harley 1200C sportster?

I have about 14000 miles on my bike, but i'm not sure if the brakes have ever been looked at. how long are the brakes expected to last?

it is a 1995 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200CHow long are the stock brakes supposed to last on a 1995 harley 1200C sportster?emailed you the answer.. How long are the stock brakes supposed to last on a 1995 harley 1200C sportster?Well, I dont know that there's a set rule since how much you use them, how hard you use them will dictate the wear. Normally a much higher milage then what you have. (30K or so)

I would still have them checked not for hieght but a visual since the bikes so old with so few miles, thy have been sitting and picking up moisture for how long now.

How long are the stock brakes supposed to last on a 1995 harley 1200C sportster?Brake pads will wear down at different intervals depending on rider style. I would think that after 14K, you should inspect or have a qualified harley mechanic check it out for you. Unless you have some mechanical skills, I would let a pro look at it, brakes are something you dont leave up to a novice. How long are the stock brakes supposed to last on a 1995 harley 1200C sportster?Brake pads are cheap but very important. At 14000 I'd say change 'em. I put on a new set whenever I put on a new tire.

How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes?

how can i change my rear drum brakes into disc brake? and are they better? and how much would the rough cost be?How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes? Are they better? Absolutely. Difficulty? Well, its a bit involved - I haven't done them on a 4th gen, but on the earlier, you were best off swapping an entire rear axle from a disc-equipped car, or buying an aftermarket kit. On top of that, you need the proportioning valve and master cylinder for a 4 wheel disc equipped camaro.

I'd estimate the cost (with effective scrounging) to be about 1000-1200 bucks.

You can improve the braking performance of your rear drums by switching over to performance shoes on your 96. While they're not the equivalent to the disc setup, it will improve the grip and fade on your drums, and pairing that with performance pads on the front will net you a very capable braking system for a fraction of the cost of the upgrade. Unless you autocross or are into 0-100-0 contests, you may find that to be a very effective alternative. How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes?Easiest option, get a used rear end from a camaro that had disc brakes. Check ebay or a local parts lot.

go to camaroz28.com for advice on how to do this. those guys should be able to help you significantly on what all the job entails. How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes?Disc brakes are much better. • How to adjust the rear brakes on my mountain bike?

it has rear calipers. i dunno the name of the type of calipers but it looks like the ones in the pic, but just a bit different, cause its an older bike.

    http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/ca

btw, can i change the brakes on my bike from calipers to disc brakes? if so, what would i have to do? how much would it cost me?How to adjust the rear brakes on my mountain bike? Those are called sidepull brakes. Here are the directions to adjust them as well as they can be, but I am guessing that the brakes are made from stamped sheet metal and will never work well. This is a little long so bear with me...

    1) Adjust the brake shoes. Loosen one shoe at a time (probably a 10mm wrench DO NOT USE PLIERS), pressing the caliper in so the shoe contacts the rim. Center the shoe onto the rim and retighten. No need for the Power of Atlas when tightening... just 1/2 turn past snug is all you need. Align all shoes.

    2) Loosen the cable fixing bolt (again, probably a 8mm, 9mm or 10mm wrench). Squeeze the shoes against the rim with one hand, then pull the end of the cable with a pair of pliers. While still holding the calipers in place tighten the fixing bolt. Again, no need for overtightening.

    3) Squeeze the brake lever HARD a couple of times. Then, as you are operating the lever check to see if both of the caliper arms are moving equally. If NOT, %26quot;tweak%26quot; the nut (probably 10mm) that holds the brake onto the bike until both arms work. You usually don't have to loosen the nut... just %26quot;help%26quot; the caliper to center while moving the nut. Repeat as necessary. This takes a bit of time when you first try it and can be a hassle.

I can tell you without reservation that it will cost you a LOT more than the value of your bike to add discs. You'll need disc compatible hubs, disc compatible brake levers, discs, calipers, cables, not to mention the requirement that your frame has to have disc brake mounts which I am certain it doesn't. However, if it DOES have mounts, figure a minimum of $300- $400 for mechanical discs and all the fixin's.

After how many miles do you change the brakes on your car?

It's cold outside and I'm too lazy to go look at my car owner's manual, but how often do you change the brakes on a car - specifically a 2001 Acura TL? This set of brakes probably has 50k miles on it and a lot of it has been city driving. I'm not hard on my brakes, but do more stop and go than I do highway miles. After how many miles do you change the brakes on your car?I recommend changing them when they need it, not by mileage. If you have some experience with a local mechanic, have them check them when you have your tires rotated. They don't really need to be replaced until they wear down to the indicators, which emit a high pitched squeaking or chirping sound. After how many miles do you change the brakes on your car?It also depends on how high quality of pads you put on. Changing from drums to disc brakes on 1964 Lincoln?

I want to change the brakes on my 1964 Lincoln from drums to disc brakes. How do I do that?Changing from drums to disc brakes on 1964 Lincoln?Well, first you will need to find out what kits are available, or what replacement parts you can use.

This swap may require new spindles. It WILL require rotors, calipers, caliper brackets, flexible brake lines, master cylinder, and maybe a brake booster. You will also need either the proper brake bias block, or a manual bias adjuster.

When I changed the brakes in my 69 F100, I used parts from a late 70s pickup because they are interchangable. I used the spindles, rotors and bias block off of a junkyard truck, got rebuilt calipers, and a new master cylinder. I did not install a power assist booster, as I prefer the feel of manual brakes.

The best mech. overall are Avid BB7's.What are the best mechanical disc brakes for mountian bikes?I don't know if they are the 'best', but I agree with mtnbkr...Avid BB7's are hard to beat.

How much does it cost to get your brakes done?

Does anyone know how much it costs to do your own front brakes? I'm going to buy the parts myself and also pay to have a friend put them in for me. I want to make sure I don't over pay him so I'm trying to found out how much labor would cost.

Thanks : )How much does it cost to get your brakes done? The front brake pads should cost between $40 to $80 for a set. They are pretty easy to put in IF you have the right tools. How friendly are you with this %26quot;friend%26quot;? I'm thinking something in trade rather than cash. Also, if there other problems, it could add to the cost. Don't be cheap, This IS a favor, from a friend. How much does it cost to get your brakes done? With your attitude he is not going to be your friend very long.It would cost around $200.00 in a repair shop,so be fair about this he has the skill to do this and you don't so do this see how long it takes him keep in mind he may have to take the rotors to be machined and this is extra work and if it takes over an hour give him at least $40.00. One more thing a repair shop has all the equipment needed to do this in 30 minutes and your friend does not,you know like a hyd. lift and air tools so keep all this in mind when you reach for your billfold. How much does it cost to get your brakes done?20 pads, 80 rotors, 60 labour. Thats for one axle so double it for front and rear. You cheap bastard. How much does it cost to get your brakes done?depending on the vehicle 20 to 40$ max....brakes are normally a job done between 30-45 minHow much does it cost to get your brakes done?it,s not a big job. i would say give him a 50 dollar bill and that,s for both sides.

How do I fix burned pads on a mtn bikes disc brakes?

I have a specialized that has disc brakes front and rear. I do a lot of downhill mtn biking, and I think I have burned my brakes. they dont grab like they are supposed to. How can I fix that, and how can I avoid that? How do I fix burned pads on a mtn bikes disc brakes?Fix it by replacing the pads with new. Swiss Stop makes awesome pads and a fluid to %26quot;condition%26quot; them before you install.

Avoid fast wear by alternating front to back brakes, when possible, on long descents. Never let go completely when control is necessary. Practice on some safe know runs first by easing off the rear when you feel the front slowing you and then the opposite. This will save your pads and rotors.

  • How can I tell if there is air in my car's brakes?

My car's brakes work fine, and always stop right away, but I have to put the pedal almost to the floor. This is my first car and I just got my license. Any advice? How can I tell if there is air in my car's brakes? It sounds like you do have air in the brakes. Best have it checked out by a shop before you have an accident. It needs to be checked out to find out if you have a leak and repaired and have the brakes properly bled so that you have a safe vehicle. How can I tell if there is air in my car's brakes?there has to be reason for air to get in,if the pedal was ok before and nothing has been opened there cannot be air.the brakes need adjusting I think. How can I tell if there is air in my car's brakes?take it to a shop an have the brakes bleed the pedal should only go down about 1 inch before the brakes start to work if your brakes go to the floor get it fixed, have you tried pumping the brakes with the motor running the peddle should get harder an pump up. you can buy a bleeder kit at the auto parts store but dont do it unless you know what your doing. it could cause a wreck if done wrong, i would take it to a brake shop if i were you before you have a accidentHow can I tell if there is air in my car's brakes?the most likely cause is low brake fluid. check that. also pull your emergency brake up but not all the way. just a few clicks, see if that raises the pedal a bit. it simulates adjusting the rear shoes. when your brakes wear, the pedal has to move farther to compensate for the missing friction material that has turned to dust on your wheels. fluid level goes down, brake pedal travel increases. if the e brake thing helps take it to a shop and have them adjust or replace your brakes. dont try to bleed the brakes yourself, you cant just open the bleeder or youll let more air in. you have to put a clear tube over the bleeder and submurge the tube in a bottle full of clean brake fluid. then you can open the bleeder and pump the brakes. too complicated to explain here. dont let inexperienced posters get you in trouble here. How can I tell if there is air in my car's brakes?Your pedal shouldn't travel that far.

Firstly jack the car up and remove the wheel, on the caliper there will be a bleed nipple. Slacken it off slighly and press the brake pedal. Repeat for all corners. If no air comes out. Take the car to a garage and have them drain and replace the brake fluid, it may have moisture contmination, which is common in fluid over 3 years old.How can I tell if there is air in my car's brakes?have it checked out by a pro or be ready to slam into something...How can I tell if there is air in my car's brakes?just to have your first car you seem pretty smart about this problem. it could be anything but air is what i would check first. ask a guy to help you and they will. its easy . just ask someone to help you bleed the brakes

How is the drive with brembo brakes?

I was wondering if I put brembo brakes into the enthusiast 350z, would the braking be harder? I just wanted to know what the difference feels like. Obviously it will brake faster. I wanted to know how are they are better. How is the drive with brembo brakes?Easier if anything. You are liable to end up getting a big hug from your seat belt stepping on the brake pedal for the first time.

They are better because the rotors are probably bigger to dissipate more heat to prevent fading. The calipers themselves likely have more/bigger pistons and bigger pads with more surface area to create more friction.

Keep in mind though that good brakes don't mean crap if your tires can't hold the road. So make sure to get something fairly sticky and if you ever change your wheels to aftermarket wheels get something wider and put a wider tire on it for maximum braking power (not to mention acceleration).

How much does it cost to get brakes fixed?

I have a 98 piece of sh*t that runs good it's just ugly and needs new brakes perhaps roters too...what is a good guess of cost for this somebody please help...so I am prepared and don't get RIPPED OFF because i'm a WOMAN.How much does it cost to get brakes fixed?I am in need of more information like the type of car you have size of engine, make, model and year.Any time you want repairs done on a car you got to have all these so a person can let you know what the total cost of a repair is going to be.And to let them know weather you have drum brakes in the rear and discs in the front. All these can help in finding out the cost of the repair.I am a brake tech.hgm20002000@yahoo.comHow much does it cost to get brakes fixed? It should not be much more than 50 for front OR rear without rotors/drums, before letting them replace a rotor/drum ask them why it needs to be replaced. Most do not actually need that. Ask for them to %26quot;show you%26quot; why it is needed. If there are grooves in the rotor/drum ask them why they can't just %26quot;turn%26quot; it, which is shaving a small amount of metal of it to smooth it out again. this costs about 15--25 each compared to near 50+ or more for replacing. At this cost they should also give a lifetime warranty, most break equipment already comes with it so unless they use cheap quality stuff, or, they do not want to stand behind their quality of work it should be standard. How much does it cost to get brakes fixed? If you only need pads cost for all four that you install about $ 40 - 80. Goodyear and Firestone and a dealership are the most expensive. If your calipers are ok figure about $200.00, or $100,00 per axle at a shop. Rotors cost more, mine about $40.00 a piece from a parts store, more if done at shop. I'd bet you know someone who knows someone who can install parts as good as a shop but lots cheaper. If asked, I would install pads only for $80-100. If you do need rotors and or a caliper or two figure somewhere around $350.00. These are just ballpark guesses. If you have a Tires Plus store in your area, I'd go there. Also, a trip to any local parts store will reveal who they think would be best and probably someone they personally know that will be HAPPY to do it considering the economy. If you have drum brakes on the rear, it's a little more complicated but easy if you've done a few. I buy the cheapest pads available and always get great life out of them, ceramic pads have given my grief because of the heat they generate, warping rotors. Precision tune has a good reputation. Your local small gas station with two bays is always cheaper than Midas or Pep Boys, Firestone, Goodyear etc.How much does it cost to get brakes fixed? You could do them yourself and save a ton of money. Probably $250 for brakes and rotors for all wheels, however could be $150 or so possibly for just the front. If you do it yourself, brakes and rotors, could be between $60 to $100, give or take. Pads only cost about $20 for the front. How much does it cost to get brakes fixed?250 for brakes all the way around and rotors is way cheap. Your looking at more like 300-450 dollars for pads, shoes, and rotors.... the national chain brake places will be best for you if you don't want to get ripped off.How much does it cost to get brakes fixed?Depends on the extent of repairs needed. Usually front disc pads and rotors could be replaced for less than $100.00 for parts depending on where you live. Midas usually offer quality work at reasonable prices. How much does it cost to get brakes fixed? Then LEARN to do it yourself. How much does it cost to get brakes fixed?new brakes all the way around and rotors should not be more than $250

How do I tighten my bicycle brakes?

My bicycle has handlebar brakes, and the rear brakes are way to loose. My bike uses a cantilever %26quot;center-pull%26quot; brake system. Also, I'm not bike savvy, so can someone help me answer this question by also be kind of specific? It would really help! Thanks! How do I tighten my bicycle brakes? There should be a screw or a bolt by which the cantilever levers are operated; if, so, just take a screwdriver or appropriately sized wrench, loosen the screw or bolt, push the pads together, the retighten the screw/bolt. If that doesn't work, you may have to buy new pads at the bike shop and/or just have the shop fix it. I wanted to know how are they are better. How is the drive with brembo brakes?Misconceptions about braking abound. Factory brakes stop just fine during the first 10 to 15 laps at a road course then get to hot then start to fade. Extra caliper pistons larger brake pads may but not necessarily always provide harder or shorter stopping distance. Mostly larger rotors and bigger calipers will improve stopping distance and amount of heavy braking you can do. Bigger rotors and calipers weigh more however. Things you can do to improve your stock brakes Metal braided brake hoses and replace the fade prone DOT 3 brake fluid with DOT 4 and use HAWK or other brand high performance brake pads. Brembo, Stop Tech, Behr and APR all make very good upgrades. (BUT) 350Z with anti lock brakes will only stop as good as the electronic controls will allow. How is the drive with brembo brakes?braking with deffinitly be harder. they stop way harder an faster, as well as staying cooler. cooler braking is betterHow is the drive with brembo brakes?Brembo brakes are very responsive, but I've had no 'hard' braking effect on my 350z.

I have had plenty of times when I've had to brake suddenly, but it's always been a very quick, but smooth braking.

The only negative point I have about Brembo brakes is that there's a heck of a lot of brake dust comes off them. But that's not really an issue. As other posters have said, stock brakes will be fine, but personally, I prefer something with a bit more trust factor built in, and for me, that's Brembo. Plus they add a little something to the look of the car too.

How do I get the most out of my brakes?

I read the reviews on a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country min van I just bought, most owners have complained of brakes wearing out, I would like to know the best way to stop, and cause the least amount of wear.

Do I pump, ride, or brake heavy? How do I get the most out of my brakes? There are several techniques you can use to save the brakes. Lightly and slowly pumping is one of the best. You can also drive by the gears and downshift to slow the car, but that can be uncomfortable in a minivan. There was an experiment conducted for fuel economy and the winner was the team who drove a regular car but drove it as if the brake pedal was on fire. This caused them to not only save gas by driving conservatively but they had minimum brake wear as well. How do I get the most out of my brakes?i would ride, they all do about the same amount of wearing but riding it applies less stress so it won't soften up(at 35 mph) just don't put it into reverse, it's unbelievable how many people do that.

The best thing about this is that it's free, well of course minus the local taxes, city taxes, state taxes. Or if you talk nice enough to the librarian you might get some help setting the repair manual aside, just for you. Seriously it's not hard. How hard is it to change brakes on a 2000 dodge grand caravan?Just changing the brake pads isn't hard to do. Make sure you don't get greasy fingerprints on the friction surfaces and be careful not to damage the brake lines when you have the calipers removed. But if you need rotors, it could be bad if they're rusted on. It took me 2 hours of beating with a BIG hammer and a whole can of liquid wrench penetrating oil and a large hub puller to get the rotors off of my son's car. It was the worst I've ever done. (and I've done a LOT of brake jobs.) If you know someone who's done it before, have them there with you in case you have any questions or run into trouble....especially since you've never done it before.

Also be safe...NEVER work on a car supported only by a jack. You should have jack stands under the vehicle in the correct position to properly support it.

How do I fix my brakes on a 90 Toyota Celica gt-s?

The brake pedal also hardens...But if I step on the brake hard it releases preassure and Im able to drive again. Could it be that I need to replace the master cylinder? How do I fix my brakes on a 90 Toyota Celica gt-s?Sounds like a problem with the caliper to me.How do I fix my brakes on a 90 Toyota Celica gt-s?The smell could be the parking brake, and the hard pedal I cannot say. I would recommend going to a reliable mechanic and getting that checked out.How do I fix my brakes on a 90 Toyota Celica gt-s?It sounds as if the brake system is not releasing hydraulic pressure when you let off of the pedal. You need to check the clearance of the master cylinder push rod. It is difficult to do without a special tool but here is the gist of it. Take off the brake master cylinder. Measure the distance from the bottom of the hole in it where the push rod goes to the surface where it mounts on the brake booster. Measure the distance from the tip of the push rod to surface to the brake booster where the master cylinder goes. These should be the same or maybe the push rod length just a touch less. If the push rod length is greater than the depth of the hole it goes into the master cylinder is not allowed to return keeping the brakes on. If this distance checks out you probably have a problem with the master cylinder. If you install a new master cylinder be sure to check the push rod depth as described above. The depth can be adjusted by holding the splines on the push rod and turning the end in or out.

Can Geico pay for getting my brakes changed?

I was wondering if it is possible to get Geico to pay for changing brakes on my car. I know it'll cost around 300-400 dollars but if we don't bring the deductible in the picture is it possible for me to get them to pay for my car repairs when I have not been in an accident? No. Car insurance doesn't cover normal wear and tear - and brakes just wear out eventually. It's normal wear and tear. Can Geico pay for getting my brakes changed?Nope. Brakes are something that normally need to be changed on a vh. This is considered normal wear and tear and an insurance policy does not cover this type of loss. SORRY!Can Geico pay for getting my brakes changed? You cannot get them to pay. Wear and tear and other vehicle maintenance is not covered. JackieWhy have my brakes started slightly squeaking?Brakes, pads are designed to squeak when they need to be changed soon,so just go get pads put on before you have bigger problems by letting them go.Trust me it will save money in the long run and pads are cheap.hope that helps!!Why have my brakes started slightly squeaking? If the noise comes from the brakes all the time, your wear indicators are rubbing %26amp; you need to have a front brake job done. $80.00-$160.00 If you only hear the noise while braking, it might just be brake dust building up. You can try cleansing your brake/rotor area at the local car wash but only after the brakes have cooled down. A lot of the times the rotors become glazed %26amp; the material of the pads causes noise which will go away when cleaned. GM's are bad about squeeking brakes, not neccessarily a problem but wise to have them inspected. Why have my brakes started slightly squeaking?2 possible reasons (there may be more but these are the two obvious ones)

1 - You may need to get your brake pads replaced. They start squeaking on purpose to let you know they're wearing too thin. If the squeaking keeps getting worse, you need them replaced. Not a costly repair if you only need to replace the brake pads.

2 - Most times, small squeaks don't mean much. Some replacement brake pads just aren't as good as the originals for noise during braking. With a 16 year old car I would bet they aren't the originals.

Just to be safe you should have your brakes checked - good luck.
