How do you attach cable to bike brakes?

I have never quite figured this out. I have the cable running from the lever trough the frame studs through the thing that holds the end of it above the brake mechanism.

These are cantilever style where I have to tighten a nut on a piece of hardware that hooks over a short cable that attached to each half of the brake.

How do I tighten the nut, pull the cable tight and hold the piece that is pulling the brakes? How do you attach cable to bike brakes? You can do it by trial and error: Estimate the position needed and mark the cable with a marker pen. Release the short bridge cable and then attach the cable. Reattach the bridge and check. Release and adjust as required.

Or, as already suggested, a nifty little tool [1].How do you attach cable to bike brakes? You need a forth hand tool. You can also pull the cable tight and hold it there with a pair of needle nose pliers and then tighten the clamp.
