How do you release seized rear drum brakes on a 1997 ford fiesta?

My mum's ford fiesta 1997 has been parked up for several months and now we've come to move it, the rear brakes seem to be stuck on. Any ideas how to release them.

ThanksHow do you release seized rear drum brakes on a 1997 ford fiesta? If the Fiesta is the same design as the Ford Focus here in the states, which I am pretty sure it is, the rear drums are held on by the large nut in the center under the dust cover, all the beating in the world is not going to remove them until the nut is removed, and the driver's side nut is probably left hand thread while the passenger side is right hand thread. How do you release seized rear drum brakes on a 1997 ford fiesta?Soak them in coca cola for a while that works with bike engine pistons that have seized. I don't know how you would do it if they're still fitted though. Proper full fat cokeHow do you release seized rear drum brakes on a 1997 ford fiesta?Chances are it was left with the parking brake pulled up tight. It will be a case of trying to get the parking brake to release. Try putting the parking brake on and off in a jerking motion to see if it will release. Try to move the car fwd. and backward a few times to see if it will let go. You may have to go underneath and look @ the linkage and see if you can make a disconnect then try to release it by going in the opposite direction with the brake mechanism @ the back of the wheel. Some WD40 may help but not excessively. Good shooting! How do you release seized rear drum brakes on a 1997 ford fiesta?you can try to hit the drums with a mallet or a hammer while someone pumps the brakes, this should break them loose. or if the car runs and drives you can move it forward and back until they break looseHow do you release seized rear drum brakes on a 1997 ford fiesta?was the parking brake engaged during this time it was parked? make sure everything is still moving underneath, and you'll probably want to jack it up and strip the rear tires and drums. Heat from the biggest blowtorch you can find will brake the rust/shoe connection, you might also want to back the adjusters off and pound the side of the brake drums with a small sledge. Be prepared to replace parts that are too rusted or siezed. The cable could be rusted--check under the car. Trace the cable and if is stuck try and release. Lub the cable with oil spray... Do not attempt to spray oils and lubricants in the brake drum. The car will not stop. As you have greased/oiled the brake shoes... If that is not it---jack up and take off the wheels. You may want to stick some WD40 in there if it doesn't work straight away. WD40 is a bit of a last resort as it will slightly compromise the braking of the car for a short while. How do you release seized rear drum brakes on a 1997 ford fiesta?check to make sure the brake booster has brake fluid. repeatedly pump the brake to move the brake fluid. apply wd 40 or any penetrating fluid to the brake disc area or calipers. unless you have drum brakes which look like they have rusted inside the drum, if thats the case you can open the brakes by bleeding your brake line.

have someone depress the brake pedal and hold it in the down position.release the pressure at each brake caliper or drum by rotating the nipple valve. when you open the nipple valve the brake fluid should bleed out. the brake pedal will loosen. repeat on all tires. How do you release seized rear drum brakes on a 1997 ford fiesta?first spray the brake cables with a lubricant such as WD 40 wait a few hours or better yet overnight to allow the lubricant to penetrate and loosen the cable. Then with the hand brake released try putting the car in reverse, back up a few feet or the length of the car and this should release the hand brake, and your on your way.

Good luck
