How do I stop my brakes from screeching?

When I ride my mountain bike, especially just around the yard, my brakes make a horrible screeching noise when I try to use them. What causes this? Can I stop it? It only does it when I apply pressure to the brakes, other than that they're normal. When me and my friends go riding, it's obnoxious. I just wanted to know if/how I can fix it.How do I stop my brakes from screeching? You do not need new brakes. All you have to do is toe them in a bit. Or you can spend your money to find most brakes will squeal if not toed in.You could also google why it's happening and find out the same.To toe them in you adjust them so the front of the pads grab first. If you have disc brakes they have a glaze on them that a fine sanding will cure.Best Wishes!

Single Legged Steve and the Surly LHTHow do I stop my brakes from screeching? You need to dial your brakes, keep your rims as clean as possible.Remove the brake pads and lightly sand the side that comes into contact with the rim(s) and replace. The main reason brakes seem to squeak is because they were not installed or dialed in properly and are just making contact with the rim but not enough pressure is applied to actually stop %26quot;on a dime%26quot; so to speak.

Since you ride a MTB instead of BMX I am assuming the brakes we are talking about are V-Brakes/Linear Pull Brakes instead of 990 style U-Brakes.
