How do I know whether my old car had asbestos brakes?

I am redoing the brakes, and I guess I need to wear a mask if the old brakes were asbestos. It's an '83 Volvo. Any thoughts? I hate masks, and don't want to wear one if it isn't strictly necessary. How do I know whether my old car had asbestos brakes?Asbestos is only dangerous if you breath it in. Eating it won't even harm you. Those paper masks you can buy at the store probably won't protect you much. A lot of harmful stuff goes right through those masks. You would need more of a respirator mask to be totally safe. Also, we breathe asbestos every day. Just not enough to harm you. It is a naturally occurring mineral. So just spray the brakes down with water and go for it.How do I know whether my old car had asbestos brakes?asbestos was used in automotive products until 1996. If the brakes are older than that they are likely containing asbestos. How do I know whether my old car had asbestos brakes? The powers tothat be say that there is no asbestos in brakes these days but I personally don't trust them. What I do is to remove the brake drums or front wheels and wash the brakes down with the hose to wash off any brake dust.

The water will wash off the brake dust without blowing into the air and will then be safe to work on without the need of a mask. Workshops need to dispose of that dust into a recepticle to be disposed of fully but should be fine for you to just hose off the driveway onto the grass. How do I know whether my old car had asbestos brakes? It does. That's why the manuals tell you not to bllow the break dust off with a airhose.

I could be wrong but aspestos has always been a ingrediant in brake pads.

Just be safe and wear a mask.

Goodluck

How much will it be to replace brakes to my car?

I have a 97 Pontiac Sunfire, makes loud screeching noise, I think brakes need to be replaced. My friend says the rotors or drums (?) might need to be replaced too. I was wondering how much it would be to have it completely done at an auto shop, and how much it would be if I buy parts myself and have someone do it for me.How much will it be to replace brakes to my car?Which brakes are you doing, front or back (disks in front or drums in back)? Also depends on how much you are replacing - rotors, pads...

When I replaced just the front disk rotors (98 sunfire, just before I got rid of the non Mopar piece of crap) , it was $40 for the pair. I can't remember how much the pads were but they weren't expensive. I did it myself, so no extra expense to pay someone. Call your local Napa, Schucks, Auto Zone... They will give you the cost to purchase the parts on your own. And then pay off a (knowledgeable) friend with some beer to do the work for you. It will be A LOT cheaper than taking it anywhere. How much will it be to replace brakes to my car?about 10 to do it yourselfHow much will it be to replace brakes to my car?not too much, as long as you get them done now, before you wear grooves in the rotors. That sound is made to remind you to change your brake pads. But eventually, there are only so many times you can turn your rotors, before you need new ones. The pads will run you about $30 a pair, the rotors about $75 each. Find a friend to put them on for you (pretty basic mechanics) and you're good to go!How much will it be to replace brakes to my car?my dads a mechanic and if u don't oaders probaly about $30-$45How much will it be to replace brakes to my car?If you can't do it, or find someone else to do it, as shop will probably cost upwards of 2-300 bucks.

I HIGHLY recommend buying the parts and doing it yourself. It's pretty simple. I have a 97 Cavalier (same car) and I do mine in my driveway. Check a Haynes or Chilton manual out of the library for added support if you're concerned about doing it yourself... but it really will save you a couple hundred dollars. How much will it be to replace brakes to my car?glowy, the brakes on a car are very important if not a must that they operate in the best of conditions.Choose a qualify brake specialist shop and have them do it. Telling the difference between ATE and Akebono Brakes?

I'm planning on replacing my rotors, pads on my 02 Grand Cherokee with products from EBC. Just need to know how to tell the difference between the brakes to order the right replacements.Telling the difference between ATE and Akebono Brakes? The akebonos can be directly swapped to replace the ate's. No mod's needed. Jeep did this due to the complaints on the brake pulse/shudder problems.

Dont worry about what you have on the Jeep just get the akebonos. Jeep stopped using the ate's due to problems with design, although I think your 02 is new enough to get th akebonos from the factory anyhow.

I had an ate seize on me last month and you can bet your a$$ I got the akebono's now.Telling the difference between ATE and Akebono Brakes?akebono usually is a silver caliper that is double pistoned. it is this way because there was a big issue with the original setup on some of those with vibration while braking. the dealer sold upgraded (akebono) calipers which were silver in color. check the local oriellys and ask them which pad number goes with which. I think its fmsi pad number md792 for original equipment. i think there was a fmsi 900 series pad for the upgrade. either way they will know which pad goes with which system. compare the new pads off the shelf to the ones on your truck to verify. they are shaped differently. once you match the pads on your truck to the new ones that will tell you which system you had.

ps

I thought they bolted up the same but I could be wrong.

by the way.... personal experience as a automotive professional tells me that akebono is top shelf stuff. why are you trying to modify. if you are just installing pads... I thought that is what ebc makes dont be fooled by all the colorful stuff. brake pads are all made in a few factories and everyone buys them from there. Brake systems that work well and are designed based on mechanically sound principles need only be set up correctly. all that other stuff is usually just a somebodys way of selling folks that dont know better a well dressed hog.

a good set of brake best select pads for your truck will perform just as well as the other stuff for less cash if the rest of the system is set up correctly.

good luck

How often should rear brakes be replaced on a car?

Some older cars have drum brakes on the rear. Those are the brakes that I am curious about. They seem to last forever. How often should rear brakes be replaced on a car?Depends on how hard you brake, how much weight you carry in the back of your car, and how tightly adjusted are the rear brakes.

A lot of drivers can get double the mileage from their rear brakes before they need replacement, compared to the front brakes.

Front-wheel drive cars are more demanding on front brakes, while rear wheel drive cars are more forgiving and can go longer.

A quick inspection of the rear brakes should be done anytime you have the front brakes replaced. Look for broken springs, missing clips, excessive scoring inside the brake drums, leaking slave cylinders, etc. And make sure there is enough lining remaining on the shoes to make them effective at stopping your car. (The rivets holding the shoes should not be scraping the drums.)How often should rear brakes be replaced on a car?I would say to have them inspected at least every 30K miles. It is important to be proactive about brake maintenance. If you wait until the brake shoe in the drum is burnt all the way to the metal it will damage the drum itself. Changing the brake shoes themselves is relatively cheap especially if you do it yourself. Things get expensive when the drum gets damaged and has to be turned in a machine shop or replaced depending on the extent of the damage. If at an inspection my shoes have 30% or less of there original life left in them I replace them.

Front breaks wear faster than rear breaks so be sure to inspected the front and rear brakes. How often should rear brakes be replaced on a car?The reason the rear drums last longer is the majority of the braking is done with the front brakes. As far as an estimate of the mileage it can vary dependent mostly on driving habits. I wouldn't be surprised if rear brake shoes could last up to 60-70K. To be on the safe side they should be checked at regular intervals to ensure they are in satisfactory condition though. How often should rear brakes be replaced on a car?usually 2 front to 1 back. If the rear brakes are properly adjustedHow often should rear brakes be replaced on a car?The front brakes on cars do most of the work in stopping a car. It's not uncommon for rear brakes to last as much as 100K miles.

I have a '67 Chevy with 240 K miles that I've had since new and I'v only replaced the rear drum brakes twice. How often should rear brakes be replaced on a car?Rear brakes do much less work than the front ones do so they tend to last much longer. There is no average replacement interval though. All brakes should be inspected at regular intervals -- every other oil change is a good interval -- and repaired or replaced as needed. How often should rear brakes be replaced on a car?a lot of times, rear brakes do last a long time

this is often because the brakes are designed to put more pressure on the front brakes (particularly if the back brakes are drum and the front are disc - my first cars had drum brakes front and back)

although you should check your brakes regularly, there is no reason to replace brake shoes until they are worn out

so, if they last forever, they last forever

because there are other parts of the brake (besides the pad) that can wear out (thinks like seals on the cylinder, and some springs) it is good to have the brakes looked at periodically

  • How long will it take to replace brakes and rotors in my car?

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee and my friend and I will be putting in new brakes and rotors. He knows what he's doing and has done it before. How long do you think it will take? How long will it take to replace brakes and rotors in my car?one good afternoon with the proper tools and assuming everything comes off and goes on easily. How long will it take to replace brakes and rotors in my car?All 4 or just front? Someone trained and with proper toold under an hour for all 4. If he has just done it once or twice, and you dont know how then probably 2-3 hours.

How do I increase the performance of my car brakes?

I just bought a used car and noticed that the car's brakes are slow to respond. I took it to a mechanic and they said I needed new front brake pads and resurfacing, which the dealer covered.

But the brakes are still slow to respond after the work. The pedal is stiff and I can press the brake all the way down and not have it stop completely...it will still gradually come to a stop. How do I increase the braking speed? How do I increase the performance of my car brakes?Either you have air in your brake lines and the brake lines need to be properly bleed to remove all air.

Or you have a faulty brake master cylinder. How do I increase the performance of my car brakes?check your brake fluid

    details

you press the pedal the fluid from the master cylinder goes to the brake cylinders and applies a force on the brake cylinders the brake cylinders push the calipers in and the calipers push the pads in and the pads push on the rotors using friction to slow them down. i dont no if you can do this to increase your brake response but i think you need to move your brake cylinder closer to the rotor or move your rotor closer to your brake cylinder this will cause you to need less brake travel to create friction between rotor and pad

i think that is how you increase brake response i am not sureHow do I increase the performance of my car brakes?try punching the breaks as in presssing then releasing and pressing again. repet this when you want to break. they say its what you should do in wet weather it might work for you.How do I increase the performance of my car brakes?the hydraulic (liquid) system sounds like its not building enough pressure, could be faulty parts like a brake booster on older cars or air is being pulled into the system reducing pressure build up. if they checked it over well and found no problems a %26quot;brake bleed%26quot; is neccessary not something for the first timer so ask a friend %26quot;backyard mechanic%26quot; to bleed the line while you pump up the pedal, pushing air out , raising the pedal height and increasing pressure and ultimately stopping power. or you can pay a shop too much money to do the sameHow do I increase the performance of my car brakes?A stiff or heavy pedal can be caused by the brake servo not working. This would severely reduce your braking power. If the pedal goes down to the floor this could be a bad leak somewhere. Master cylinder seals or rear brakes. Check your brake fluid level. If its going down you got a leak. If i were you i would take it back and tell them to fix it or give me my money back. Pumping the pedal is a very short term solution because if you do have a leak your fluid will be gone after 10 to 20 pumps and then you got no brakes at all.How do I increase the performance of my car brakes?Have the mechanic check them and the back brakes to. The wheels should be locking up if you floor the pedal. Maybe they didn't bleed the brakes right, or the back brakes are going out, so the front is doing all th work. This can be dangerous when you really need them. How do I increase the performance of my car brakes?Well bleeding the brakes is just getting the air out when you change the calipers or wheel cylinders hoses or flush the old fluid when your system gets opened basically. Depending on what you drive you may be able to get cross drilled rotors they are more responsive due to the fast they dissipate the heat and pressurized gas that forms between the pad and rotor there usually available at a parts store or like summit on-line. They cost the same as a good quality replacement rotor. How do I increase the performance of my car brakes?I agree with the above theory that you have air in the lines. you need to %26quot;bleed%26quot; your brakes.
