How much should I pay for brakes on my car?

I have a Volvo s40, 75000 miles 2006. A local gas station wants to charge me 725 for front and rear brakes and resurfacing of the rotors. I live in ny and

this includes tax. Is this alot for for a small place that is not Volvo dealer? If so, how much should I be paying?How much should I pay for brakes on my car?That is too much in my opinion.



Not sure how picky you are about such things but I happened to find a mechanic on craigslist who did side jobs on the weekends. I was kind of leery at first but it worked out great. I've had no problems at all with them and it's been almost a year.



I did buy new rotors for the front at the auto parts store, as they really weren't much money. I figured it would save on some time too, so he didn't have to turn them.



I know craigslist is a gamble sometimes, but this time it worked out for me and I paid him $50 to do the front brakes.
