How hard is it to add hand brakes to a cruiser bike with coaster brakes?

The kiddo prefers the caliper brakes, can I add them to a bike that didn't have them to start with? How much would that set me back %26amp; is it something that I would need to go to a bike shop to do? I've done light maintenance on bikes before... If there is a hole in the cross member you can mount caliper brakes.
